A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rig on Friday killed four people and wounded several others, according to the regional governor. The attack also caused significant damage to residential and educational buildings.
Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has endured continuous Russian bombardment since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022. Governor Sergiy Lysak confirmed that three women and one man were killed, while five others were injured, with three in critical condition.
Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it a reminder of the threat Russia poses and reiterating that it can only be stopped through global pressure. The strike caused a fire and left debris scattered throughout the city, with emergency services evacuating residents from damaged buildings.
Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated that the attack involved ballistic missiles and violated international law, which prohibits targeting civilian infrastructure.
Kryvyi Rig, located about 80 kilometers from the front line, had a population of around 600,000 prior to Russia’s invasion. This attack follows a series of Russian advances and territorial claims, including the capture of Slovianka in the Donetsk region.
