Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu has alleged that some local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are exploiting the ongoing demolition in Makoko to secure foreign funding for personal gain.
Speaking to journalists, the governor claimed that these organisations have sought multiple grants and resources under the guise of aiding displaced residents, but have failed to deliver meaningful support. “Some of these NGOs are shouting and crying more than the bereaved,” he said, adding that the state is reviewing their activities and intends to present evidence of any wrongdoing.
The demolition exercise, which began in December 2025, targets unsafe structures built under high-tension power lines and in other hazardous areas. According to Sanwo‑Olu, the operation is necessary to protect lives and maintain public safety, not to unjustly displace residents.
The Makoko community, a waterfront slum in Lagos, has long faced scrutiny due to its informal structures and vulnerability to flooding and electrical hazards. Advocacy groups have criticised the government’s approach, citing displacement, destruction of homes, and insufficient relocation support.
While civil society groups argue that the demolitions have caused unnecessary hardship, Governor Sanwo‑Olu maintains that safety remains the priority and has warned NGOs against exploiting the situation for financial gain.
The state government has promised to continue monitoring NGO activities and ensure that any humanitarian assistance reaches residents genuinely in need. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
