Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging technology for revenue growth, emphasizing the need for innovative and sustainable approaches to address fiscal challenges. The governor made this declaration at the recently concluded Eko Revenue Plus Summit in Lagos, a two-day event that brought together policymakers and private sector stakeholders to explore new revenue opportunities.
The summit, anchored by Modo Ante in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, served as a platform for robust discussions on how technology and innovation can enhance revenue generation and improve public service delivery.
In his keynote address, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of diversifying revenue strategies beyond taxation, advocating for the optimisation of state-owned assets and the creation of new economic opportunities. He called on the private sector to partner with the government through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in key areas such as real estate, waste management, and technology.
“These sectors hold enormous untapped revenue potential,” the governor stated. “The Lagos State Government has consistently demonstrated leadership in adopting cutting-edge technology to drive development and improve revenue collection.”
He pointed to the Lagos State Unified Revenue Portal as a successful example of how digital tools have streamlined tax collection processes, improved transparency, and enhanced accountability.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue, Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, presented a comprehensive roadmap for achieving sustainable revenue growth. He outlined how Lagos has widened its tax net and implemented data-driven policies to improve compliance.
“Our success stems from our ability to innovate and deploy intelligent systems that simplify revenue collection while ensuring accountability,” Ogungbo said. He emphasized the role of analytics tools developed in partnership with private sector technology firms in identifying untapped revenue sources.
Ogungbo also called on other states to adopt Lagos’ data-centric approach to revenue generation, positioning it as a replicable template for modern governance.
Bamijoko Okupe, Chief Executive Officer of Modo Ante, underscored the consultancy firm’s mission to transform governance and public sector performance through innovation. He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for prioritizing technology-driven governance and thanked the Lagos State Government for its partnership in organizing the summit.
“The Eko Revenue Plus Summit has proven that when government and private sector stakeholders collaborate, the possibilities for revenue generation and sustainable development are limitless,” Okupe said.
He reiterated Modo Ante’s commitment to advising governments on initiatives that incentivize private sector investments while promoting sustainable revenue streams. Okupe also highlighted the role of data analytics and economic modeling in addressing complex governance challenges.
Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded the summit with a pledge to continue leveraging technology to manage Lagos’ growing urban population and expanding economy. “We remain committed to staying ahead of the curve by embracing innovative solutions to fiscal challenges,” he affirmed.
The Eko Revenue Plus Summit demonstrated that collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders is essential for driving innovation and creating sustainable economic opportunities in Lagos State.
