The National Assembly has approved an additional ₦288 billion supplementary budget for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the 2024 fiscal year. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives gave their assent during their respective plenary sessions on Tuesday, marking a significant step in addressing the infrastructural and administrative needs of the nation’s capital.

This supplementary budget will be allocated to various sectors within the FCT, including transportation, healthcare, and security. According to officials, the funds are intended to fast-track ongoing projects and ensure the completion of critical infrastructure developments before the end of 2024.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the importance of the supplementary budget in meeting the growing demands of the capital city, especially with increasing urbanization and the need for improved service delivery. He highlighted that the additional funds would help reduce delays in project execution and bolster the overall economy of the FCT.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, noted that the approval was in response to the pressing need for improved living conditions in Abuja, as well as the expansion of public services to accommodate the city’s rising population.

This supplementary budget brings the total allocation for the FCT in 2024 to over ₦900 billion, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing the development of the capital city. Lawmakers also urged close monitoring of the budget’s implementation to ensure transparency and value for money.

With the FCT being the seat of government, this injection of funds is expected to stimulate further investment and promote growth in key areas such as education, infrastructure, and housing, benefiting both residents and businesses alike.
