The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service (NMRS), a specialized agency tasked with tackling illegal and artisanal mining across the country. The bill, sponsored by Senator Onawo Ogoshi of Nasarawa South, has successfully passed its second reading.

The proposed NMRS will operate similarly to mines rescue services in other countries, focusing on emergency response, enforcement of environmental and safety regulations, and curbing illegal mining activities. Its core responsibilities include rescuing trapped miners, handling hazardous materials, providing emergency medical care, and investigating mining-related accidents.

Senator Ogoshi stressed that creating the NMRS is vital for diversifying Nigeria’s economy, reducing overdependence on oil revenues, and promoting sustainable mining practices. He emphasized that the mining sector, which has long been underdeveloped, requires revitalization to contribute effectively to national growth.

The bill has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals for further review, with the committee expected to report back to the Senate within two weeks.
