Senate, Not Clerk, to Decide on Senator Natasha’s Resumption

The Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly has clarified that it lacks the authority to review, reverse, or interpret decisions and resolutions made by the Senate.

This clarification was issued in a statement by the Director of Information of the National Assembly in response to media reports regarding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and her bid to resume legislative duties. The statement explained that her resumption can only be determined by the Senate through its resolutions, not by the Clerk’s office, despite a communication from her legal representatives threatening legal and disciplinary action.

According to the statement, the Clerk’s office functions strictly as an administrative arm, guided by constitutional principles, respect for institutions, and adherence to the Senate’s standing rules. It emphasized that its role is limited to administrative duties, without interference in legislative resolutions.

The statement further urged members of the public to remain patient and allow the appropriate institutions, including the Senate and the courts, to carry out their constitutional responsibilities on the matter.
