On Thursday, the Senate called for an investigation into the recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and established a committee to probe the matter.

The committee will also invite the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to explain the reasons behind the demolitions, which have displaced numerous residents.

The motion, introduced by Senator Ireti Kingibe of the FCT Senatorial District, expressed concern over the unlawful destruction of buildings in the nation’s capital and urged an immediate halt to further demolitions.

The Senate resolved to form an investigative committee to examine the demolitions and report its findings within a set timeframe.

In addition, the Senate summoned the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC for failing to respond to invitations regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.

The Odukpani-Itu Highway, located in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, serves as a vital link for transportation and economic activities in the South-South region.

A motion by Senator Osita Ngwu revealed that Julius Berger had ignored multiple invitations to provide details about their involvement in the project, despite receiving over N18 billion in public funds.

The Senate condemned the refusal of Julius Berger and other entities to honor lawful invitations, deeming it a contempt of the National Assembly and a violation of constitutional authority.

As a result, the Senate has invoked its constitutional powers to issue a warrant of arrest to ensure the Managing Director of Julius Berger attends the rescheduled investigative hearing.
