The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate the circulation of false reports alleging that Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, suffered a health emergency and was rushed to a hospital in London.

The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session following a point of order raised by Senator Titus Zam, who condemned the spread of the misinformation across various media platforms.

Senator Zam described the reports as unacceptable and called on relevant authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible in order to deter future incidents.

Presiding over the session, Senate President Akpabio expressed concern over the growing challenge of regulating media content, particularly as it affects public office holders. He noted that much of the content circulating on some platforms amounts to “garbage in, garbage out,” highlighting the difficulty of curbing falsehoods.

The directive follows recent online rumors alleging that Akpabio collapsed and was hospitalized abroad, claims which his aides have firmly dismissed as fake news.
