The 10th Nigerian Senate has officially shifted its resumption date from April 29, 2025, to May 6, 2025, to accommodate the International Workers’ Day public holiday and to allow senators time for constituency engagements.
This announcement was made through an internal Senate memo dated April 20, 2025. The memo, signed by the Senate Clerk, Andrew Ogbonna Nwoba, was addressed to all members of the Red Chamber.
The Senate had earlier adjourned on March 27 to enable lawmakers observe both the Easter and Eid-El-Fitr holidays.
According to the official circular:
“Distinguished Senators, I am directed to inform you that the resumption of plenary sittings of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Monday, 29th April 2025, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 6th May 2025.
“This postponement is made to allow Distinguished Senators to stay with their constituents during the International Workers’ Day public holiday in the first week of May and to further enhance constituency engagements.
“Distinguished Senators are kindly requested to take note of this postponement while regretting any inconvenience the change might have caused.”
Why the Senate Resumption Was Postponed
The decision underscores the Senate’s recognition of Workers’ Day celebrations on May 1, a national public holiday in Nigeria. It also emphasizes the lawmakers’ ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with their constituencies, especially after an extended break.
