The Nigerian Senate is set to commence screening and confirmation hearings for seven ministerial nominees appointed by President Bola Tinubu. According to Senator Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, the nominees have already begun submitting documentation to Parliament in preparation for the process, which is scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
In a statement issued Monday night, Senator Lado confirmed that the nominees are complying with procedural requirements and will be screened and confirmed in line with Section 147 of the Nigerian Constitution. President Tinubu’s formal request for the Senate’s confirmation of these appointments was submitted last Thursday in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read at a plenary session.
The seven ministerial nominees include:
• Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda – Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction
• Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi – Minister of Labour and Employment
• Amb. Bianca Odinaka Odumegu-Ojukwu – Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
• Dr. Jumoke Oduwole – Minister of Industry, Trade, and Development
• Idi Muktar Maiha – Minister of Livestock Development
• Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata – Minister of State, Housing
• Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad – Minister of State, Education
President Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, emphasizing the importance of these appointments in addressing key areas of national development. The screening process will be held at the Senate chamber and is expected to draw significant public and political interest as the nominees present their qualifications and policy positions for the respective ministries they aim to lead.
