The Nigerian Senate has called on the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecommunications providers to review the recent surge in internet data costs, emphasizing the need for affordable pricing for all Nigerians.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC-Cross River) during the Senate plenary session on Wednesday.

Key Concerns Over Rising Data Costs

The motion, titled “Urgent Need to Address the Increased Cost of Data Services in Nigeria,” raised concerns over the steep rise in internet prices, which have increased by up to 200%, placing a heavy financial burden on Nigerians, especially young people relying on digital platforms for work and business.

“This move has placed significant financial strain on millions of Nigerians, especially young people who rely on the internet for their livelihood,” Senator Ekpenyong stated.

He further emphasized that fiber-optic internet services remain unaffordable for many Nigerians, leaving them dependent on mobile telecommunications companies that have significantly hiked their prices.

Economic Impact and Senate’s Response

The Senate highlighted that many young Nigerians depend on affordable internet for:

Freelancing and remote work
Digital marketing and e-commerce
Social media management and content creation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio backed the motion, stating:

“This motion, when implemented, would assist young entrepreneurs. It will not only enable them to remain in business but also ensure they have affordable prices that will generate revenue and profits for them.”

Beyond addressing the immediate increase in data costs, the Senate resolved to:

📌 Develop a policy framework for affordable internet services in Nigeria.
📌 Urge the Federal Government to establish and support tech hubs with free or subsidized internet access for young entrepreneurs, students, and innovators.
📌 Mandate the Senate Committee on Communications to investigate the factors driving high data costs and recommend solutions for a sustainable, business-friendly telecommunications sector.
