Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic was admitted to the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade on Saturday shortly after returning from the United States, according to a statement from his office.
While no official reason was provided for his hospitalisation, Serbian media reported that Vucic cut short his scheduled visit to former US President Donald Trump in Florida due to a sudden health concern.
“He was admitted to the Military Medical Academy immediately after landing,” his office said, adding that more details about the president’s condition would be shared “in good time”.
According to national broadcaster RTS, the Serbian leader opted to return home following medical advice after feeling unwell. His planned meeting with Trump was therefore postponed.
This latest development comes amid growing political tension at home, where mass protests have erupted following a fatal incident at a train station in Novi Sad. The Serbian government has been under fire, with demonstrators demanding accountability.
President Vucic has previously faced health challenges, having been hospitalised in 2019 for heart-related issues.
The timing of his hospitalisation raises questions about his upcoming international commitments—particularly his pledged appearance at Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event is expected to be attended by several world leaders and hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Just days ago, Vucic had reaffirmed his intent to attend the Moscow event, saying:
“I gave my word to President Putin.”
However, attending the military parade in Red Square could put Serbia at odds with the European Union, which the country aspires to join. In addition, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine would not guarantee the security of any foreign leaders visiting Russia.
