Ruth Ogunleye, a former soldier, has called on the Nigerian Army to publicly disclose the findings of the investigation that led to her discharge.
In January, Ogunleye accused three senior officers, including Colonel Ishiaku Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment, intimidation, and threats to her life. She alleged that the colonel made unwanted sexual advances, which she rejected, and subsequently threatened to dismiss her from the army, denied her promotion opportunities, and refused her requests for an army pass.
Ogunleye also claimed that the colonel evicted her from her apartment and had her confined in a psychiatric hospital. She reported that whenever she attempted to raise concerns about Abdulkareem to senior officials, he would tell them that she was suffering from mental illness.
On September 24, army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu announced that investigations into Ogunleye’s allegations had cleared Abdulkareem of any wrongdoing and confirmed her discharge from the service. He noted that Ogunleye’s “mental condition” had reportedly worsened during the investigation.
In a response shared via TikTok, Ogunleye requested that the Nigerian Army release the investigation’s findings in the same way her discharge was announced.
“It is well known that I was discharged from the service on June 15, 2024. I respectfully ask the Nigerian Army to publish the outcome of the investigation that led to my discharge,” she stated.
“On January 9, 2024, I came forward on social media to report the harassment I faced from Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo.
“I urge the Nigerian Army to share the investigation results on its social media platforms so that the public will understand what truly occurred and what led to my discharge. I would greatly appreciate it if my request is considered.”
