Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the recently concluded 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

His spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, shared the news in a statement on Sunday.

During the assembly, Shettima urged world leaders to recommit to reforming the United Nations Security Council. He advocated for permanent seats for Nigeria and other African nations, emphasizing the need for the UN to enhance its relevance and credibility in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

“Some permanent members of the UN Security Council have provided encouraging, albeit tentative, indications of support for Council reform. We welcome this shift in tone and urge a swift acceleration of the process,” Shettima stated.

He added, “The Security Council should be expanded, both in permanent and non-permanent member categories, to reflect the diversity and plurality of the world. We fully support Secretary-General Guterres’ efforts in this direction.”

The Vice President underscored that the “United Nations embodies multilateralism, which promotes inclusivity based on the principles of peace, sustainable development, and human rights.”
