Grammy award-winning Nigerian singer Tems has announced the cancellation of her scheduled March 22 concert in Kigali, citing concerns over Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 armed group, which is waging an offensive in eastern DR Congo.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, expressed regret for promoting the concert without awareness of the ongoing conflict.

“I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected.”

Her announcement comes as international condemnation grows over Rwanda’s alleged backing of M23, which recently seized control of the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mineral-rich east.

Meanwhile, M23 leaders have vowed to continue their offensive toward the DR Congo capital, Kinshasa. The UK government has also stated it is considering reviewing British aid to Rwanda over its alleged involvement in the crisis.

The DR Congo government has accused Rwanda of exploiting the region’s vast mineral resources through its military involvement with M23—claims supported by a UN expert report in July, which found that thousands of Rwandan troops are present in eastern DR Congo and exert de facto control over M23.

Rwanda, however, denies the accusations. President Paul Kagame has not admitted to direct military involvement but insists that peace in the region cannot be achieved until the FDLR, a DRC-based armed group formed by former Hutu leaders involved in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, is dismantled.
