Spain Seeks EU Aid as Wildfires Escalate in Extreme Heat

Spain has asked European partners for two Canadair firefighting planes as wildfires, fueled by a blistering heatwave, spread across the country. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the aircraft will be on standby, with more help possible if conditions worsen.

A volunteer firefighter has died from severe burns and several others are in hospital. The AEMET weather agency warns of “extreme” fire risk nationwide, as temperatures hit 45 °C (113 °F) for a tenth straight day.

Across southern Europe, wildfires have burned over 410,000 hectares this year more than double 2024’s total. Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy are facing the worst conditions, with strong winds and drought driving flames.
