Spain’s Valencia Region On Red Alert Amid Flood Risk

Spain weather agency warned of “extraordinary danger” in Tarragona, Castellon, and Valencia for Sunday afternoon and evening, and Monday, a warning echoed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Schools, libraries, and parks are now closed on Monday in Valencia, Spain after a heavy rainfall. Due to the fears of a repeat of floods that hit the area last year, the region is now on a red alert.

This downpours has caused localised flooding and a ravine to overflow in Aldaia, one of the towns hardest hit by October 2024’s floods that killed more than 230 people. So far, no injuries have been reported.

The agency warned of “extraordinary danger” in the provinces of Valencia and Castellón, as well as the province of Tarragona in the neighbouring region of Catalonia.

The flooding provoked by last October’s torrential rain was exacerbated by the effects of climate change.

Residents have staged a lot of protests since against what they allege was mismanagement of the crisis last year, saying regional officials did not alert them in time despite a weather agency having issued an alert.
