The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday with a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from defender Michelle Alozie.
In a match that lived up to its billing as a clash of giants, the nine-time champions battled fiercely against the reigning titleholders, Banyana Banyana, in a tense semi-final showdown in Morocco.
Nigeria began the match on the front foot, dominating early play and creating several chances. A goal-line clearance and a series of impressive saves by the South African defence kept the scores level until the 44th minute, when Nigeria finally broke the deadlock. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the penalty spot after a South African defender was penalized for handling a cross from Folashade Ijamilusi inside the box.
Ajibade’s strike sent the Falcons into halftime with a narrow 1-0 lead.
South Africa responded with intensity after the break, pressing Nigeria deep into their half. Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul by Osinachi Ohale. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, levelling the game at 1-1.
As both sides searched for a winner, the match seemed destined for extra time—until the 94th minute. In a moment of late drama, Michelle Alozie latched onto a pass from Esther Okoronkwo and sent a speculative long ball into the South African box. The ball flew past everyone, including the goalkeeper, and nestled into the net, stunning the South African backline and sending Nigerian fans into celebration.
The last-gasp winner sealed a hard-earned victory for Nigeria and kept their dreams alive of clinching a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.
The Super Falcons will now face either host nation Morocco or fierce regional rivals Ghana in the final.
