Less than 48 hours after the North-East Governors’ Forum held its 11th meeting in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on a military base in the state.
According to local sources, the insurgents targeted the 27 Task Force Brigade in Bunigari, located in Gujba Local Government Area, during the early hours of Saturday.
“It was in the early hours of today, around 1.00am we heard a heavy gun battle at the 27 Task Force Brigade which is unusual to the test firing by the military. We later confirmed it was suspected insurgents,” residents told Channels Television.
A military source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, also confirmed the incident, noting that details were still unclear at the time of filing this report.
In recent weeks, suspected insurgents have ramped up attacks across the region. They reportedly struck several military formations, destroyed a cell culvert along Goniri Road, and abducted commuters traveling the Damaturu–Bunigari–Biu Road. These recurring attacks have heightened tensions and fear among local communities.
The assault comes on the heels of a regional security meeting where North-East governors deliberated on new strategies to tackle the growing insecurity in the region, which has been plagued by violent extremism for over 15 years.
