Six sexual assault survivors have filed a lawsuit against Match Group, the parent company of popular dating apps Hinge and Tinder, accusing the company of negligence and systemic failure to protect users. The lawsuit claims the platforms continued to permit and promote the dating profile of Stephen Matthews, a former cardiologist, even after he had been reported by users.
According to the suit, Matthews was allowed to remain active on the apps despite multiple warnings, allegedly giving him continued access to unsuspecting women. Prosecutors say Matthews used the platforms to meet victims, drugging and sexually assaulting several women over an extended period while his profile stayed live.
In October 2024, Matthews was sentenced to 158 years in prison after being found guilty of drugging 11 women he met through the dating apps and sexually assaulting eight of them. The lawsuit now raises serious questions about accountability, safety protocols, and the responsibility of dating platforms to act swiftly when users report dangerous behavior.
