Sydney will host the final of the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup, World Rugby announced on Thursday while unveiling the official draw for the Australia-hosted tournament.
“We are delighted to reach another significant milestone on our journey to Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027,” said World Rugby chair Brett Robinson in a statement.
Local reports indicate that the final will take place at the Sydney Olympic Stadium, an 80,000-seat venue originally built for the 2000 Olympics.
Sydney last hosted a Rugby World Cup final in 2003, when Australia lost to England in a dramatic extra-time match.
Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh, a former Wallabies player who competed in that game, described playing in a home final as the “absolute pinnacle” of his career.
“I am delighted that this generation of Wallabies will have the privilege of experiencing the emotion, excitement, and joy of wearing the gold jersey before our passionate fans at a Men’s Rugby World Cup in our own backyard,” Waugh said.
In addition to the final, Sydney will host both semi-finals, the third-place playoff, and several other knockout and pool-stage matches.
Other tournament venues include Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Adelaide, and Townsville.
The Rugby World Cup will take place from October 1 to November 13, according to World Rugby’s official schedule.
