James Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, has called for increased collaboration between Taiwanese and Nigerian businesses to boost manufacturing investments and trade growth. Speaking at Taiwan Technology Day in Lagos on Friday, Huang emphasized the potential for partnership in technology, petrochemicals, and green energy sectors.
Huang highlighted the positive trend in trade between the two nations, noting that while progress has been made, there remains significant potential for mutual benefits. “By working together, we can create a win-win environment that strengthens both economies,” he stated. He revealed that Taiwanese companies are being encouraged to set up manufacturing operations in Nigeria and invited Taiwanese media to visit the country to witness the opportunities firsthand.
Despite acknowledging the challenges in Nigeria’s business environment, such as electricity issues, Huang expressed optimism about finding solutions and creating more investment opportunities. “Electricity remains a key concern, but we are actively engaging with stakeholders to address this issue,” he said.
Olusola Obadimu, Director-General of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, echoed Huang’s sentiments. He described Taiwan’s interest in Nigeria as a significant opportunity for growth. “Challenges are opportunities for those who know how to take advantage of them,” Obadimu said. He highlighted Taiwan’s visit to local projects, such as the Dangote oil refinery, as evidence of potential for deeper collaboration.
Gabriel Idahosa, President and Chairman of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the importance of technology-driven partnerships. “Nigerian businesses rely heavily on Taiwanese technology. Their interest in sectors like oil, gas, and entertainment will deepen trade relations,” Idahosa remarked. He welcomed the initiative as a step towards more collaborative opportunities between the two nations.
