The Taraba State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in parts of the state. The outbreak was detected in Sardauna Local Government Area, officials said.
According to a statement released by the ministry, the situation has been contained, and efforts are underway to prevent further spread of the disease to other parts of the state.
“Our surveillance team has swiftly moved into action to isolate and manage the affected area. The situation is under control, and no further spread has been recorded,” the ministry said.
The ministry advised poultry farmers to intensify biosecurity measures, report unusual bird deaths promptly, and avoid movement of live birds from affected areas.
Although no human infections have been reported, health officials have warned residents to exercise caution when handling poultry products.
Nigeria has experienced periodic outbreaks of avian influenza since 2006, with several states including Plateau, Kano, and Lagos reporting cases in recent years. The most recent national alert from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) indicated active bird flu cases in at least seven states.
Authorities in Taraba have assured poultry farmers and consumers that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working with federal agencies to ensure public safety. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
