Tesla’s sales in Germany continued to decline in February, with registrations dropping over 76% year-on-year to just 1,429 vehicles, according to official data released Wednesday.
The slump follows billionaire CEO Elon Musk’s vocal support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) during the country’s recent elections. Sales had already plummeted by nearly 60% in January, bringing Tesla’s total decline in Germany to 70% over the first two months of 2025.
The AfD secured almost 21% of the vote in the February 23 elections, a historic result fueled in part by Musk’s endorsement on his platform, X, where he claimed the party was the only one that could “save Germany.”
Despite AfD’s gains, other political parties in Germany continue to reject cooperation with the far right due to the country’s historical context.
Germany’s electric vehicle market has faced challenges since the government scrapped key subsidies, but Tesla’s decline stands out against an industry-wide recovery. In February, overall EV registrations in Germany rose 31% year-on-year to 36,000 units. However, total new vehicle registrations fell 6.4% from the previous month to around 203,400.
