Thousands of Nigerians flocked motor parks across Abuja, Lagos, and other states to take advantage of the Federal Government’s initiative to reduce transport fares by 50% during the festive season.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, had announced last Thursday its agreement with transport stakeholders to subsidize road travel costs, offering relief to citizens traveling for the holidays. Additionally, free rail transportation was launched on December 20, 2024.

Despite initial delays due to funding challenges, the scheme officially commenced with participation from key transport unions, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria. The palliative covers 144 routes from Abuja and Lagos to state capitals, except Anambra, where the destination is Onitsha.

The initiative, which will run until January 5, 2025, is expected to benefit over 288,000 road travelers and 320,000 rail passengers.

When one of our correspondents visited the Oshodi bus terminal in Lagos on Tuesday, excited passengers shared their joy at the scheme’s implementation.

“I never knew such a benefit was on until I got to the terminal this morning. Honestly, I am very happy, and God will bless our President,” said Mrs. Ejiofor Deborah, a passenger at the terminal.

Another traveler, Mrs. Ojediran, expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is a major relief during these difficult times. Transport fares can be discouraging, but this initiative has lifted a huge burden. I hope more people can take advantage of it.”

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, provided insights into the scheme’s scale and efficiency. He stated that 708 vehicles have been deployed to ensure smooth operations and projected that the road travel initiative would cater to 17,588 passengers daily.

“We have a situation room at the ministry with WhatsApp numbers, SMS lines, and call centers to handle complaints and ensure the initiative runs smoothly,” the minister said.

Senator Alkali emphasized that the discounted fares are based on actual market prices collected during a detailed survey. Transport unions and associations have partnered with the government to ensure fair pricing and transparency.

Yusuf Ibrahim, General Secretary of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, noted the overwhelming turnout. “A lot of people have turned up. This initiative is running until January 5, and it’s already having a positive impact. Many buses have been deployed to meet the demand,” he said.

The Federal Government’s transport subsidy is part of a broader effort to ease the economic burden on Nigerians during the festive season, ensuring that citizens can travel to reunite with loved ones for the holidays. The program also underscores the government’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges nationwide.
