The Federal Government has launched a $500 million irrigation and water infrastructure project aimed at strengthening food production, improving dam safety, and expanding sustainable water management across Nigeria.
The initiative, known as the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) Project, is being implemented in partnership with the World Bank as part of broader efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure long-term food security in the country.
Speaking during the flag-off of the project, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, described the programme as a major intervention designed to modernise irrigation systems, strengthen dam operations, and improve water resource management nationwide.
According to the minister, the project will introduce modern irrigation infrastructure, improve dam safety, and support farmers with more reliable water supply for agricultural production. The initiative is also expected to enhance hydropower development and strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to floods, droughts, and climate change.
Officials noted that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope development agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises food security, economic resilience, and sustainable infrastructure development.
The SPIN project will focus on institutional strengthening, irrigation modernisation, improved dam safety, and effective project management to ensure the successful delivery of its objectives and improved livelihoods for millions of farmers across the country.
