The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded plans to begin the electrification of major rail corridors across Nigeria as part of efforts to modernise the country’s railway system and improve transportation efficiency.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) disclosed that the electrification programme will be implemented in phases over the next five years, starting with key high-traffic corridors that play a crucial role in passenger and freight movement across the country.

According to the Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, the move to electric rail operations will make train services faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective while reducing dependence on diesel-powered locomotives.

He explained that the initiative forms part of a broader railway modernisation programme aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and boosting economic productivity.

Officials also noted that electricity for the rail network may be generated through gas-to-power solutions, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to ensure stable energy supply for the system.

Nigeria has already expanded several standard-gauge rail lines in recent years, including the Abuja–Kaduna, Lagos–Ibadan, and Warri–Itakpe routes, which have improved connectivity between key economic centres.

Industry stakeholders say the planned electrification of rail corridors is expected to significantly enhance passenger experience, reduce operational costs, and strengthen cargo transportation across the country.
