On Friday, President Bola Tinubu posthumously awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. The award was presented during a solemn ceremony at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja, where the late military leader was interred.

In his tribute, President Tinubu praised the exceptional contributions of the late General Lagbaja to national security. The President described Lagbaja’s appointment as Chief of Army Staff as one of his most significant decisions, highlighting the general’s dedication and service to the nation.

“As a lasting symbol of our gratitude, I have conferred upon the late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous national honor of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR),” Tinubu said.

The award was received by Mariya Lagbaja, the widow of the late COAS, who accepted it on behalf of the Lagbaja family amid applause from the assembled dignitaries.

In his remarks, President Tinubu urged the military to remain resolute in the face of loss. “Let death not defeat us,” he said. “Lift your heads high in honor of your army chief.”

The President reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the armed forces, emphasizing that the sacrifices made by military personnel in defending the country would never go unrecognized. He also expressed his deep appreciation to the Lagbaja family for allowing their loved one to serve with such honor, assuring that General Lagbaja’s legacy would inspire future generations.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Defence Minister, state governors, and senior military officials.

President Tinubu had announced the passing of General Lagbaja last week, revealing that he died in Lagos after a period of illness. Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja served as Chief of Army Staff for just over a year, having been appointed by President Tinubu in June 2023. During his tenure, Lagbaja played a crucial role in several major security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
