President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded former President Goodluck Jonathan as a steadfast guardian of democracy whose influence continues to shape Nigeria long after leaving office. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, President Tinubu praised Jonathan’s decision to prioritize national stability over personal ambition, describing him as a symbol of leadership that places country above self. He noted that Nigeria’s democracy endures because of leaders like Jonathan who uphold the nation’s collective values.

The President highlighted global and regional threats to democracy, warning that institutions are increasingly undermined by individuals driven by power and extremism. He contrasted leaders who misuse their influence with those who remain dedicated to service, commending Jonathan for setting an example through his foundation’s work in diplomacy, good governance and election management. Tinubu urged Nigerians to respect democratic processes and electoral outcomes, emphasizing that the nation is greater than any individual ambition.

Former President Jonathan, in his remarks, reflected on the experiences that inspired the creation of his foundation and reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. He expressed concern over recent security challenges across the country and called for greater responsibility from political leaders. Guest speaker Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas also underscored the importance of functional democratic institutions and youth empowerment in shaping Africa’s future. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including former leaders, traditional rulers and political figures.
