President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to incorporate electric vehicles, broadening Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner transportation. The programme will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), serving as the central coordinating body for the country’s clean mobility strategy.

Under the new mandate, the initiative will continue deploying CNG infrastructure including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, and vehicle conversion programmes, while simultaneously leading the development and nationwide rollout of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. The move is aimed at accelerating adoption of both gas-powered and electric mobility solutions.

The President has also directed the immediate establishment of a framework to ensure affordable and accessible vehicle conversion kits nationwide. To support this, PiCNG & EV will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria and financial institutions to design cost-effective financing options, alongside the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units to expand access to CNG.
