President Bola Tinubu has called Nigeria’s push to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games a “dream” that must be realized, stressing that the milestone would mark a first for Africa.

In a post on his official X account Wednesday, Tinubu said hosting the Games would send a powerful signal about Africa’s place in the Commonwealth’s future. “It’s time for Africa,” he declared, urging the body to “complete the circle of unity.”

Nigeria will make its final presentation before the Games’ evaluation committee on Wednesday. The delegation is led by Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) President Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) earlier confirmed that the country met the March 28, 2025 deadline to express interest in bidding for the event. Abuja, the proposed host city, last staged a major multi-sport tournament in 2003 when it hosted the African Games.

Nigeria previously lost its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow. The NOC says the 2030 Games would provide an opportunity to showcase national progress, boost global standing, and deepen the country’s sports culture.

The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is set for Glasgow in March 2026 after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to soaring costs.
