President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country, emphasising that the safety and well-being of citizens remain a top priority.

President Tinubu made the remarks on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence to celebrate Eid el-Fitr. He said that during his recent meetings in the United Kingdom, he had discussed modern security interventions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Your presence here today, and the numbers, show your sincerity, commitment, and value for friendship and togetherness,” he said. “The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity.”

The President added that his administration is collaborating with other nations to obtain equipment and support to strengthen security across Nigeria.

President Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, returned on Friday from a three-day State Visit to the United Kingdom, where they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. During the visit, the President also met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and secured significant investment agreements.

He urged state governors to remain steadfast in translating their ideas and visions into policies that directly improve citizens’ livelihoods. He also advised them to provide incentives to cushion the inflationary effects of the Middle East crisis on energy and transportation prices.

President Tinubu thanked Vice President Shettima for the condolence visit to Borno State and reassured residents of strengthened protection through the use of new technology.

In response, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended the President for his interventions under the Renewed Hope Agenda and congratulated him on the successful State Visit to the United Kingdom.

“While our mission has been to maintain a good relationship with the United Kingdom, this State Visit, the first in 37 years, is bold and significant. Together, we must ensure that insecurity is brought to an end,” AbdulRazaq said. He added that discussions on state police are ongoing and that the NGF will submit proposals to the National Assembly to establish a legislative framework.

Governors at the meeting included Sen. Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Alex Otti (Abia), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Dikko Umaru Radda (Katsina), Ahmed Usman Ododo (Kogi), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Caleb Mufwang (Plateau), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo).
