Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has shared personal details about a past relationship that left her feeling disrespected, while also explaining why she does not see herself as the “Queen of Afrobeats.” Speaking on the Joe Budden Podcast, Savage revealed that her former partner, also a public figure, insisted their relationship remain private, even as he openly engaged with other women in her presence.

According to the singer, he told her he did not want their relationship made public because he wanted to avoid scrutiny. However, Savage said the arrangement quickly became uncomfortable. “It was like, okay, when we go out, I might be talking to other people, but I’m just doing it so people don’t suspect. And I’m like, okay, but how far are you going with this?” she recounted. She recalled attending events with him, only to watch him closely interact with other women while claiming it was part of keeping their relationship hidden.

The singer’s revelation sheds light on the emotional toll of balancing personal relationships with public life in the entertainment industry. Savage, who has long been celebrated as one of Afrobeats’ leading voices, used the platform to stress that titles such as “Queen of Afrobeats” are not her focus. Instead, she emphasized authenticity and growth, noting that her journey has been about navigating challenges with dignity while staying true to her craft.
