In a candid conversation with media host Chude Jideonwo, Toke Makinwa opened up about the harsh realities of living through a highly scrutinised marriage while battling private pain that many failed to understand. She highlighted how public perception often trivializes survivors’ experiences, assuming their struggles were minimal because they emerged alive and stronger.
Toke revealed the frustration of being misunderstood, explaining that society sometimes envies those who bounce back instead of offering support. “People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 mins stronger, it unsettles others,” she confessed, urging people to withhold judgment until they’ve walked in her shoes.
The media personality also shared how the public nature of her marriage pushed her decision to leave, admitting she might have stayed longer if the pain was private. As a mother, she emphasised that prioritising her wellbeing over societal expectations was essential to preserving her life and future, despite the difficulty of walking away.
