The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced today that the national power grid experienced a disturbance at approximately 11:29 AM, due to a sudden frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz. Immediate efforts to restore power were initiated, with the Abuja axis successfully brought back online within minutes, while recovery efforts continue across other affected areas.

The frequency spike was traced to an issue at one of TCN’s substations, which was promptly shut down to prevent further complications. In response, TCN emphasized its commitment to ongoing repair and upgrade work across the grid, aiming to enhance stability and resilience in the system. Key projects include repairs on the 330kV Shiroro–Mando transmission line, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and restoration of the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line.

TCN also referenced an investigative report on recent grid collapses, noting that it has already begun addressing identified weaknesses. “Efforts are being made to close gaps highlighted in the report and to enhance the overall stability of the grid,” a TCN spokesperson said, explaining that these include both technical upgrades and strategic interventions recommended by the committee.

While these upgrades are in progress, TCN acknowledged that some instability may persist. The company urged public patience as it works to fortify Nigeria’s power infrastructure. It also highlighted that the improvements are essential to prevent future disturbances and to support Nigeria’s socio-economic development by ensuring reliable electricity.

“We understand the impact of these disruptions and are actively taking all necessary measures to ensure the grid’s long-term stability,” TCN assured, noting that it is also addressing infrastructure vulnerabilities, including those caused by vandalism.

TCN’s extensive upgrades mark an important step toward a more resilient power supply, with the company pledging to continue prioritizing the reliability and stability of Nigeria’s grid.
