Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, for allegedly refusing to negotiate an end to the war with Russia.
At a campaign rally in North Carolina, Trump stated, “We continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refuses to make a deal, Zelensky.” He derisively labeled Zelensky as “probably the greatest salesman on Earth,” adding, “Every time he came to our country, he’d walk away with $60 billion. What do you have left now? The country is absolutely obliterated.”
A proposed face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York is reportedly on hold, following an interview in which Zelensky suggested that Trump “doesn’t really know how to stop the war.”
Trump’s comments came shortly after Zelensky’s address to the UN, where he accused Russia of planning catastrophic attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
In early September, Trump claimed he had a “guaranteed” plan to end the war but stated he wouldn’t disclose it unless he wins the upcoming presidential election. He also asserted he could resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kiev within 24 hours, although he did not elaborate on how he would achieve this. Recently, he has voiced strong opposition to U.S. funding for Ukraine, urging European nations to increase their support.
When asked by AFP, Trump’s team declined to confirm whether the meeting with Zelensky had been canceled.
