Trump Announces Trade Deal with Indonesia Amid Tariff Threats

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he had reached a trade agreement with Indonesia, just one week after threatening the Southeast Asian nation with steep new tariffs. However, no specific details of the deal have been released.

“Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, noting that the agreement came through direct talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. He promised more information soon but did not elaborate on tariff levels or terms.

The announcement follows Trump’s threat to impose a 32% tariff on Indonesian goods starting August 1 — part of a broader strategy to pressure trade partners into new deals. While Indonesia has yet to confirm the exact terms, former deputy foreign minister Dino Patti Djalal said officials in Jakarta appeared satisfied, hinting that more details would emerge shortly.

Trump has faced mounting criticism over his tariff-heavy trade strategy, with only a few finalized deals — including with Britain, Vietnam, and a partial easing with China. Analysts say without concrete results, Americans may lose confidence in the administration’s economic approach.

“Tariffs are the pain, agreements are the gain,” said William Reinsch of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Without real deals, the public may see this as a failed strategy.”
