Trump Halts Planned Sanctions on Colombia Following Migrant Agreement

The White House announced on Sunday that Colombia had reversed its stance and agreed to accept deported citizens on military flights after President Donald Trump threatened significant sanctions.

While Colombia has not officially confirmed the statement, the White House revealed it would delay most planned tariffs and sanctions against the country. The agreement included Colombia’s “unrestricted acceptance” of all illegal Colombian nationals returned from the U.S., including on military aircraft, without delay or limitation.

The White House added that the move demonstrated that “America is respected again,” and emphasized that President Trump would continue to fiercely defend U.S. sovereignty, urging other nations to cooperate in the deportation of their citizens residing illegally in the United States.

The dispute began when Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a leftist leader, angered Trump by initially refusing to accept deported Colombians on U.S. military flights. Petro had previously stated he would accept migrants, but only “with dignity” and on civilian flights.
