US President Donald Trump has shared a chart detailing welfare usage rates among immigrant households in the United States, stating that approximately 33.3 per cent of Nigerian immigrant households receive some form of public assistance.
The chart, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform on January 4, 2026, is titled “Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin.” It lists welfare participation data from about 120 countries and territories, outlining the proportion of immigrant households that benefit from public support programmes.
According to the data, the assistance referenced includes services such as food aid, healthcare benefits, and other government-supported welfare programmes.
Trump’s post comes amid renewed debate within US domestic politics, particularly among Republicans, over immigration policy, welfare dependency, and the economic contributions of immigrants. The administration has repeatedly argued that access to public benefits should be a critical consideration in determining immigration eligibility and enforcement standards.
The publication of the chart aligns with a broader pattern of messaging from the Trump administration this year, framing welfare usage as a central issue in discussions on immigration reform and national economic priorities.
