Trump Mocks Trudeau, Calling Him the ‘Governor’ of the ‘State’ of Canada

US President-elect Donald Trump mocked Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday, referring to him as the “governor” of a state instead of the leader of the neighboring country.

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform shortly after midnight. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”

This remark followed reports suggesting that Trump had floated the idea of making Canada the 51st US state during a meeting with Trudeau in Florida. The discussion occurred amidst Trump’s threats to impose significant trade tariffs once he takes office in January.

According to a Fox News report, Trump told Trudeau that if Canada couldn’t withstand his proposed 25 percent tariff on all Canadian imports, it should consider joining the United States.

Though the notion has often been joked about, Trump is known for making provocative statements, particularly on social media, which can be interpreted as either humor or bluster. During his first term, Trump also discussed the idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark.

In a televised interview aired on Sunday, Trump asked, “Why are we subsidizing these countries?” referring to Mexico and Canada. He added, “If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state.”

Despite his remarks, both Trump and Trudeau publicly stated that their meeting at Mar-a-Lago went well. Trump has long accused Canada and Mexico of not doing enough to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking, even as both countries are part of a trilateral free trade agreement with the US.

After the Florida dinner, Trump called the meeting “very productive,” while Trudeau described the conversation as “excellent.”
