US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at identifying and cutting off federal funds used to support undocumented migrants, the White House announced.
According to a fact sheet released on Wednesday, the order directs federal agencies to review all federally funded programs that provide financial benefits to undocumented immigrants and implement corrective measures.
“It ensures that federal funds allocated to states and local governments will not be used to support ‘sanctuary’ policies or aid illegal immigration,” the statement read.
The order also mandates stricter eligibility verification processes to prevent individuals unlawfully present in the United States from accessing federal benefits.
The White House emphasized that the move is intended to ensure taxpayer dollars are not used to encourage or sustain illegal immigration.
This executive order is part of a broader series of immigration-related actions taken by Trump since assuming office last month.
However, The New York Times noted that undocumented immigrants are largely ineligible for federal benefits, except in limited emergency situations.
