President Trump, Putin Agree to Hold Summit in Budapest to Discuss Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to hold a new summit in Budapest aimed at discussing a possible end to the war in Ukraine. The decision followed what Trump described as a “productive” two-hour phone call between the two leaders. The Kremlin has not yet issued an official statement on the call.

The announcement came just a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s scheduled visit to the White House, where he is expected to appeal for increased U.S. military assistance — including long-range offensive missiles.

The unexpectedly positive tone following Trump’s conversation with Putin has raised fresh questions about Washington’s next steps in supporting Kyiv, as well as the broader direction of U.S. policy on the war.
