Trump Reiterates BRICS Tariffs Threat

US President Donald Trump on Thursday reaffirmed his threat to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations, just days before a February 1 deadline to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

Trump had previously warned of steep tariffs on BRICS countriesBrazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—if they pursued efforts to create an alternative to the US dollar. On Thursday night, he doubled down on his stance.

“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar—or they will face 100% Tariffs.”

Trade Tensions Rise as February 1 Deadline Nears

Trump’s renewed warning comes as a key February 1 deadline approaches, when he has vowed to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico unless they crack down on illegal migration and curb fentanyl trafficking into the US.

Additionally, Trump has separately threatened China, a BRICS member, with a 10% tariff increase on goods by February 1, citing concerns over the trade imbalance and China’s alleged role in fentanyl supply to the US.
