President Donald Trump said the U.S. has opened a Section 232 investigation into imported furniture, with tariffs expected once the review ends in about 50 days. He framed the move as a way to revive American manufacturing in states like North Carolina and Michigan.
The announcement hit markets immediately: Wayfair, Williams-Sonoma, and RH shares all fell 6–7%, while domestic maker La-Z-Boy rose 2.5%.
Industry groups warned tariffs could drive up prices and strain supply chains. The American Home Furnishings Alliance criticized the national security rationale, saying the policy risks hurting consumers more than helping U.S. jobs.
If imposed, tariffs could reshape the $120 billion U.S. furniture market as early as October.
