The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported that two individuals lost their lives on Sunday following a collision between two trucks on a Lagos road.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed that two other people were rescued from the wreckage. The statement was issued by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA.

Bakare-Oki explained that one of the trucks involved in the accident was loaded, while the other was empty. He said the rescue operation, carried out in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos Fire Service, and the Nigerian Army’s 174 Battalion, took place at Powerline, near Cele Bus Stop in Ita-Oluwo, Ikorodu.

“The tragic incident, which occurred earlier today, resulted in the rescue of two individuals trapped in the wreckage, while two others were found dead,” he said. “All victims were quickly transported to the General Hospital in Ikorodu, where the survivors are receiving medical treatment.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that the loaded container truck experienced brake failure while allegedly trying to avoid a revenue collector. The mechanical failure caused a series of events, including collisions with other vehicles and damage to nearby buildings.

Bakare-Oki noted that LASTMA officials promptly secured the accident scene with caution tape to protect the public and assist emergency responders.

He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and praised the rescue teams for their heroic efforts. He also wished the injured survivors a swift recovery.

Efforts to clear the scene are ongoing, with LASTMA working to remove the trucks and restore traffic flow in the area. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and urged all road users to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents.
