UCH Ibadan Resident Doctors Declare Indefinite Strike Over Power Outage

Resident doctors at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan have commenced an indefinite strike due to persistent blackouts in some of the hospital’s residential quarters.

Dr. Uthman Adedeji, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), confirmed the strike to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, Oyo State, citing unresolved electricity issues despite recent reconnections.

100 Days of Blackout and Partial Restoration

After enduring over 100 days without power, UCH was recently reconnected by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). However, only some residential areas regained power, prompting the doctors to take action.

Earlier, the association had issued a communiqué, warning of a total strike starting Monday, February 17, 2025, if power was not fully restored.

Resident Doctors Demand Full Power Restoration

Dr. Adedeji explained:

“Arising from the just-concluded Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of ARD UCH, we observed that only a part of the residential quarters was reconnected. Some other parts remain in darkness.

“In light of this, we have no choice but to proceed with the planned indefinite strike until all residential quarters are properly connected.

“We acknowledge the efforts of the UCH management but stress that more needs to be done to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

The association assured that it would continuously review the situation while advocating for improved living conditions for its members.

Impact on Healthcare Services

The UCH resident doctors’ strike could significantly impact healthcare delivery, as they play a critical role in the hospital’s operations. Patients and stakeholders are urging authorities to resolve the crisis swiftly to prevent disruptions in medical services.
