The UK Home Office has raised the amount foreign nationals must show as “proof of funds” to study in the country, effective from January 2, 2025. This increase aims to align with rising living costs and updated maintenance loans available to domestic students.
Under the new rules, students heading to London will need to show proof of £1,483 per month, compared to the previous £1,334. Those studying outside London will need to provide evidence of £1,136 per month, up from £1,023.
For international students studying in London for nine months or more, this means demonstrating savings of £13,348 to secure their visa. Students studying outside London will need £10,224.
The Home Office explained that the change ensures financial requirements reflect the revised cost of living in the UK. If students have already paid a deposit for UK accommodation, it can be deducted from the total amount they need to show.
The department will continue adjusting the proof of funds requirements to match inflation and maintenance loan changes.
