The United Kingdom has unveiled new measures to tackle violence against women and girls, including the introduction of Raneem’s Law and the launch of a pilot domestic abuse protection order scheme.

According to a government press release issued on Friday, Raneem’s Law—named after Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem, who were killed by Raneem’s ex-husband—will require police to respond swiftly to reports of domestic abuse. It will also ensure that victims receive urgent specialist support and resources.

The pilot domestic abuse protection order scheme, set to begin in early 2025, will equip 999 control rooms with domestic abuse specialists. These specialists will advise on risk assessments and collaborate with officers in the field. The initiative will include the use of new technology, such as rapid video response, to enhance police efficiency in responding to domestic abuse calls.

Starting in November, the government will enforce stricter measures, requiring more domestic abusers to stay away from their victims and imposing harsher penalties for non-compliance. These new orders will apply to all forms of domestic abuse, including violence, stalking, and controlling behavior.
