The United Nations Security Council on Thursday welcomed the election of Lebanon’s army chief, Joseph Aoun, as the country’s president, marking the end of a two-year presidential vacancy. The Council emphasized the importance of fully functional state institutions to tackle Lebanon’s pressing political, economic, and security challenges.

Algerian ambassador Amar Bendjama, representing the Council’s rotating presidency, delivered the statement, underscoring the significance of Aoun’s election in stabilizing the country.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed support for Aoun’s election. His spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, described it as “a critical step towards overcoming Lebanon’s political and institutional impasse after over two years of presidential vacuum.” Dujarric urged the swift formation of a new government to address the aspirations and needs of the Lebanese people through functional state institutions.

Joseph Aoun, 61, takes office at a time of significant challenges. He must oversee a fragile ceasefire in southern Lebanon and appoint a prime minister capable of implementing the economic and structural reforms demanded by international creditors in exchange for a much-needed financial bailout.

The election offers a glimmer of hope for Lebanon as it faces political instability, economic collapse, and ongoing tensions along its southern border. Aoun’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating these challenges and rebuilding trust in the country’s governance.
