A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, has reportedly taken his own life due to financial difficulties.
The deceased, a student of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), was on a strong academic standing with a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication before his tragic death.
The incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, the state capital.
Sources within the university community revealed that the student had been struggling financially, especially since resuming school last year. He had lost his father a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired school teacher, to shoulder the financial burden of his education. His peers had previously raised funds to cover his tuition and basic needs, but his struggles persisted.
Overwhelmed by his situation, the student reportedly consumed a poisonous substance last weekend after his roommate left for lectures, leaving behind a note explaining his decision.
His roommate returned to find him unresponsive and raised the alarm.
A senior administrative officer at the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as shocking and noting that the university community had been plunged into mourning.
